fever
Ms. Gump asked:

My son has been running a fever for a couple of days. It ranges from 101 – 103 F. I’ve been giving him over the counter meds but they really aren’t bringing it down. Suggestions?
He’s 16 years old.

103 is for concern. you should ave taken him to doctor by now.

he’s got an infection. I wouldn’t let a fever run more than 48 hrs in a child…(over 104 and their brains start to cook, literally.)

well don’t be too concerned. Keep trying to help him get better, let him drink alot of water and the if it still dosn’t come down for a week then you should better go see the doctor to check it.

1-2 days.
If you’re using fever-reducers, then the body’s natural defense against germs is suppressed.

Is this out of the normal for your child? anything over 102+ and we go to the doctor, if it hits 103+, we are in the emergency room!

My daughter has severe allergies, so she is constantly having fevers, coughing, etc. I would try Benadryl or Children’s Tylenol plus a good cold bath and cold wet cloth on the forehead if you decide not to go to the doctor.

it really depends on the age and the other symptoms. Just call the peds office and ask them if they think he needs to be seen or if you should continue with the meds. What are you giving him – my peds office suggested toggling between tylonal and motrin

its not “how long” its how high really.

you should worry over a low fever for about 5 days. but if it gets high (around 104-106) even if it is for one day, you should worry.

104+ is when enzymes start dying, and that is really bad.

You don’t say how old he is. Any fever in a newborn should be treated as an emergency. Older babies up to 36 months’ age are at lower risk of serious disease, and those older still rarely have serious infections without other symptoms that will tip you off.
You also don’t say whether there are any focal symptoms. If there’s an obvious minor source for the fever (a cold, for instance) your level of worry will drop considerably. And finally and perhaps most importantly, how is he acting? If he’s running around playing, you obviously have a lower worry level than if he’s lying listless and not responding to your ministrations.

103 is not good, you are waiting too long already. if you cant get him to a doctor real soon then give him a bath in tepid water….not hot or cold….this will drop the temperature immediately and get to an ER

103 is time to go to the doctor, the meds might be making it less than it really is. take him in.
