And I’ve also heard that being in the cold weakens your immune system, so you’re more susceptible to catching a cold virus.
So which is it? I’m confused.
Please tell me what your stance on this is. Thank you!

The ONLY way you can catch a cold is a virus. Once you have the cold, the elements may make you feel worse, but will not cause it.
You can only catch a cold from Bacteria!!!! and Germs!!! Not from being outside in the cold with your hair wet. Thats a bunch of crap our parents tell us because– well i dont know why they tell us that– but its a bunch of crap
I you get too cold your immune system is not as strong and you could be more susceptible to the virus.
1) Myth: You can catch the flu or a cold from going outdoors in cold weather.
Fact: The flu and colds are more common in the winter months because that is when the viruses spread across the country. It has nothing to do with being outside in cold weather.
2) The “common cold” is misleading since the illness has nothing to do with cold weather. Certain viruses that cause the common cold tend to be more active in the winter and school year, which misleads people into associating this illness with climate or temperature. Colds occur in warm, southern climates as well. I see plenty of people with cold infections in the summer time.
Colds are caused by viral infections requiring contact with a sick person. They are not influenced by cold weather nor being improperly dressed.
Many myths still exist about catching colds that are incorrect. Changes in weather and dampness may affect someone’s arthritis but will not cause a cold. Going outside with a wet head or getting wet in the rain cannot cause any infection at all. Bundling up will not prevent a cold nor will it help the cold to go away.
Normally, your immune system is exposed and your body fights off the infection. You stay healthy. If you have already been exposed to the virus and currently have it in your system, getting chilled may reduce your immune system allowing the virus to expand its hold and eventually take its toll. That is why it ‘appears’ that you get it from going outside and getting cold. Please note that getting ‘chilled’ is different from being in cold weather. Most people in cold weather don’t get chilled unless they are wet.
So, your Mom is right, but not for the reasons she believes. Also, summer colds are caught in pretty much the same way. Someone has a virus and passes it onto you.
I agree with the poster above for everything except her final paragraph.
I’ve also heard that being in the cold weakens your immune system, so you’re more susceptible to catching a cold virus. your right on both.
All of the other respondents are right in that you cannot catch a cold by merely being cold or being in the cold. Colds are caused by viruses and you must come in contact with the virus in order to catch one.
That said, getting cold (lowering your body temperature) may make you more susceptible to a cold — i.e. you come in contact with the virus and are more likely to feel the effects of it because your immune system has been lowered due to your body being chilled.
A good way to keep your immune system always working at its peak is to take a proven immune booster. My family takes Immune Alert, an all-natural extract from baker’s yeast (beta glucan) that has been studied for decades and proven to increase the immune system’s function.
